The Clay Sculptures -
Boat Series THE BOAT AS A DREAM OF REALITY
The boat, as a symbolic vessel containing our thoughts, emotions and dreams, represents our "dream of reality" floating on the "sea of unconsciousness". Each boat in this series represents some form of mankind's Illusions, denials and/or dramas of suffering that are so tightly woven into the fabric of the human experience. When we examine how most people spend this gift of life we are confronted with a boat lacking a pilot, a compass to steer, and a true destination; a boat virtually shipwrecked on a sea with no shore in sight. "Very few people know how to live. Only he who knows how to live knows how to die. We are not living. We are simply drifting along with the tide, weeping, crying, bewailing, being constantly buffeted by the winds of desire and passion and carried away by the strong currents of sense pleasures pleasures toward misery and pain." Maharaj Sawan Singh Our birth is the beginning of this journey on the "sea of life". In many cultures the boat is the vehicle used for transporting souls across the water (both in the physical and spiritual sense) bound for a symbolic destination—the arrival to some 'mythical' shore where one completes the journey from life to death or from life to some higher spiritual plane. However the darkness that now surrounds us has clouded our ability to steer a true course—-to arrive at a destination that should be our true birthright. |
