The Clay Sculptures - page 1

Tom Wolver's art has been shapedby the African, American Indian and Ancient Mexican cultures. He is forever drawn to images that embody authentic primitive energy--images that carry within them ritual magic, mysticism, and shamanic transformational experiences such as shape shifting and healing the spirit.

"Each clay sculpture is hand-built and then bisque-fired. After this process the pieces are then pit-fired - i.e placed in a half-barrel, covered with sawdust or wood-shavings where a fire is then lit from the top of the barrel. The barrel is covered after the fire gets extremely hot and the smoke trapped in the barrel brings about the stark black and brown colors that characterize my sculpture."
